Abstract

Sounding was a short artist film (3 mins) commissioned by Channel 4 for their SlotArt series and was broadcast during prime time television on the 10th and 11th December 2001. Set on the pilot boat that operates out of Berwick upon Tweed harbour, the film explores the capacity of the crew to visualise the shifting landscape of the estuary and sea bed, which they know intimately but have never seen. The work examines how linguistic forms are used to express knowledge by the crewmen, through drawing on other sources of visual reference and use of poetic language, to describe a changing landscape that has never actually been seen. Sounding is developed from the video and sound installation, PILOT (2001).
