Abstract

The LMTO method has been applied to calculate band structures for the heavier rare-earth metals. The calculations are relativistic. Thulium in particular has been considered. where a frozen core approximation is used. and the outer electrons are treated self- consistently. Problems associated with the localisation and interactions of the 4f electrons are discussed. The comparisons between experimental data and calculated quantities are encouraging. but more data on high-purity single crystals would be helpful.
