Abstract

Al-27 solid state NMR allows the isotropic chemical shift and quadrupolar interaction parameters for the four crystallographically inequivalent AlO6 sites in kyanite, a polymorph of Al2SiO5, to be deduced. Magic angle spinning at two fields (11.7 and 17.55 T), satellite transitions and double rotation accurately constrain the Al-27 NMR interactions. The advantages of the differing techniques are discussed.
